Every day is research
When you deal with food and beverages for a living, every social activity, even every meal, is an opportunity for research. It’s one of the coolest aspects of our job.
This point was driven home on a recent date in Laguna Beach, CA. Hungry for a drink and a snack before seeing a local play, we stumbled upon a restaurant that specialized in organic, vegan and gluten-free offerings. We were skeptical. But they had a full bar, and it was in walking distance to the theater. So we took the plunge.
What a wonderful 60 minutes! At the Nirvana Grill in Laguna Beach, the food was amazing, the staff friendly and the atmosphere conducive to intimate conversation. Better yet, we found ourselves inspired, dreaming up pairings. Yup, we were working on a date!
The dry white wine I was sipping went perfectly with their mushroom ravioli. And the Jack & Coke my date chose was bold enough to stand up to the Roasted Poblano Chili, which was served with a cream cheese garlic toast that was so good we got into a tug-of-war over the last half piece.
We left with some great memories, and some ideas for new partnerships. Every day is research, and when you keep your eyes open for new (or forgotten) pairings, you won’t be disappointed.
