How We Met: Stories of Finding Brand Love, Part 4: Back to their Roots

One of our absolute favorite parts of this business is meeting a company when they’re just starting out. We see their first cool idea, follow them as they grow and change, and then cheer on their successes. We like to think we have a knack for spotting a brand that will someday have the magical 80% ACV required to team with most of our clients.

Our first encounter with the gang at Back to the Roots was, as is typical, at a food show. They were showing their Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Farms. Literally, it’s a box that sits on your kitchen counter that, in 10 days, delivers a full crop of oyster mushrooms.  A very green and cool idea, we thought, and they sent us one (it worked!). But, really, we wondered, would this kind of thing catch on?

After success with the mushrooms, they launched what is now Water Garden, a “closed-loop ecosystem” in which an herb garden sits atop a small aquarium.  The fish feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water. It’s sustainable farming on your kitchen counter!

Their latest launch? Equally cool: Garden in a Can. The brilliance to this innovation is no messy drainage holes, thanks to the inclusion of Biochar, a 2,000-year-old invention with the ability to combat climate change. You can grow organic basil or cilantro right on your windowsill.

We love these products, and can’t wait to team them with a like-minded brand. They are another Dovetail, in their way. They combine disparate elements into sustainable, productive products. They DOVETAIL their way to innovation and success.
