Meet your Matchmaker: Danita Hill

Posted September 21, 2016 by Vicki.

We at Dovetail are brand matchmaking experts — and now, it’s time to get to know the pros who make the matches. Meet Danita Hill, Director of Client Services.

Before Dovetail: Danita has held a variety of professional roles — she’s been the Executive Director of the Kansas Physical Therapy Association, a school secretary, a Kindermusik teacher, an administrator for the Kansas Youth Soccer Association, even a housekeeper. “I’ve done a lot of things, but all my roles have had that project management element in them,” Danita smiles.

What brought her to Dovetail: While Danita worked for the Youth Soccer Association, her office was next door to Dovetail’s Kansas City headquarters, and she and Vicki hit it off. When they realized they had loved ones battling the same form of cancer, they grew close. “It was time for something new, and I just happened to stop by Vicki’s office to say goodbye, and told her to let me know if she heard of any job openings,” Danita says. Danita sent Vicki her resume, “and Vicki said she wanted to hire me!” The rest is history.

Why she loves her job: As Director of Client Services, Danita manages all aspects of cross-promotion execution. From coupons to collateral and everything in between, she makes sure details are in place for fantastic brand partnerships. But it’s the people she loves the most. “I love the people I work with, and I enjoy getting to know the people at the brands we work with. To me, it’s important to get to know them on a personal level,” she says.

Better-than-ever promotions: “Once the match gets made, it’s my job to go above and beyond,” Danita says. “I encourage brands to get their sales teams talking to each other, working on social media posts and more. We’re always discussing how can we index this further into the market so consumers see this in as many ways as possible. I’m always willing to go to bat for our clients.”

How she met her match: Danita’s first date with her husband Charlie was a blind date — well, kinda. “A friend in my sorority dated a boy who was good friends with Charlie. Sherry kept telling me what a great couple we would make, and I kept telling her I wasn’t at college for my “MRS” degree. She finally convinced me to ask him to the Delta Gamma Pinafore Party and we had a great time!” Danita and Charlie recently celebrated 31 years of marriage.

Outside work: Danita loves spending time with her family — husband Charlie, son Scott and daughter Sarah, and daughter-in-law Taylor and son-in-law Matthew. Danita is the proud grandmother of Emerson. She loves time with her dog Calle and granddog Bailey. And Danita is also an avid volunteer, having recently completed her term as Treasurer for the nonprofit Braden’s Hope for Childhood Cancer. “I’m proud to be part of that organization, and the purpose is to raise awareness for pediatric cancers.” Plus, she and Charlie enjoy traveling. “We love to hit local wineries wherever we visit!” (We at Dovetail call it research!)

Favorite drink: Everyone in the food and beverage industry has a favorite. “I’m evolving as a wine drinker! I enjoy a crisp Pinot Grigio, some Pinot Noirs . . . but mostly, I love trying all the different wines. That’s our industry!” Near the Kansas City Dovetail offices, she loves local German-style beers from KC Bier Co.

What she tells herself on tough days: Even pro brand matchmakers have tough days every once in awhile. “My dad was in the military, and when we faced struggles, he’d always say, ‘Tuck and roll. There’s nothing in the way except you.’ My philosophy is that there’s no such thing as a hurdle or an obstacle. An obstacle is just an opportunity — especially with our clients, there’s always a way through it. It’s about getting the right people together to talk about the problem, and there’s always a solution.”

Best tip for a lasting love connection: Brands and humans alike, Danita points to communication. “Always communicate. That’s the key — never be afraid to let your feelings show!”
