Ode to our Favorite Sandwich Pairings
At Dovetail, we love us some sandwiches. Sandwiches can do it all. Craving healthy greens? Done. Prefer greasy grills? Ditto. And hey, they’re comfortable being casual (think a good ham and cheese while on a picnic) or all dressed up gourmet-style. We’re singing the praises of our favorite sandwich combos.
Which brings us to the BLT. There’s just something magical about the combination of bacon, lettuce and tomato. The BLT morphed into a fan favorite sometime in the mid-20th century. The grocery store boom and the food magazine industry provided the platform, and the famously abbreviated sandwich became popular. And no surprise there — everyone loved the idea of bacon on a sandwich, and those fresh veggies provide the perfect bed for its salty crispness.
Then there’s the good old peanut butter and jelly. The first reference to the now-infamous PB&J was in 1901, and it’s been a favorite ever since. Due to its low cost and high nutrition, peanut butter sandwiches became one of the top children’s meals during the Depression. Today, it’s a lunchbox staple.
Some of our other favorite sandwich combos? Grilled cheese. Philly cheese steak. Reuben. You know, the usuals. And guess what all of them have? One (or more) tasty food paired with another.
That’s what makes sandwiches good: the combination of it all. Like any good relationship, sandwiches are great because of the partnership. Sure, the ingredients are solid on their own. But things get really incredible when paired up.
